What the connector does

The AWS connector reads the Systems Manager inventory, region by region, with an IAM user that has a single permission: ssm:GetInventory. It covers EC2 instances and servers managed by Systems Manager, including outside AWS.

What comes into TechWatchAlert

  • Installed applications (name, version, publisher) on each managed instance
  • Each instance in the fleet, with its OS; terminated instances are ignored
  • A comparison with distribution advisories when the OS is known
  • Up to 20 regions read per connector

Setup

  1. Make sure the SSM Agent is running and inventory collection is enabled (Systems Manager › Inventory)
  2. Create a dedicated IAM user with only the ssm:GetInventory permission, then an access key
  3. In TechWatchAlert, enter the regions, the access key ID (AKIA…) and the secret key
